Turning a Small Cape Coral Backyard Into Outdoor Living Space With a Custom Dock

At this home on Surfside Boulevard in southwest Cape Coral, the pool deck runs almost to the seawall. The homeowner told us she felt like she had no backyard at all. What she did have was a canal, and the right dock could turn it into the outdoor space the lot was missing.

WB Williamson Bros. built an approximately 1,300 square foot WearDeck dock designed for spending time on, not just for tying up a boat. It has a tiki hut, an open water viewing cutout, a fish cleaning station, and a lower platform for kayaks and paddleboards.

LOCATION

Southwest Cape Coral, FL

PROJECT TYPE

Custom dock with paddle craft launch

DOCK

Approximately 1,300 sq. ft. main dock, plus an approximately 120 sq. ft. paddle craft dock

PRIMARY CHALLENGE

Creating usable outdoor space where the yard ends at the seawall

The Client’s Situation

With the pool deck so close to the seawall, there was no lawn, no shade, and nowhere to gather outside except poolside. The homeowner wanted the dock to work as an extension of the house.

She had two specific requests: an opening in the deck for gathering around or fishing through, and a low launch platform for kayaks.

What Made This Project Challenging

Fitting Several Uses Into One Dock

A tiki, a viewing opening, a fish cleaning station, and a launch platform each need their own space. The layout had to give each one room without making the dock feel crowded.

A kayak launch is only useful close to the water, while the main dock sits up at the seawall cap. The two levels had to be connected with steps that are comfortable to use.

Our Custom Dock Solution

We built the main dock with 5/4” x 6” WearDeck at ½ inch spacing, wider than a typical gap. On a dock this size, the wider spacing is intended to let rising water pass up through the deck instead of building pressure underneath it.

An Open-Water Viewing Cutout

One 8’ x 12’ section of the dock was left open to the water and framed with a railing. It gives the homeowner and her guests a place to gather, look down into the canal, or drop a line straight through the deck.

A Lower Dock for Kayaks and Paddleboards

At the outer edge, two 18” x 20’ steps lead down to an approximately 120 square foot paddle craft dock, with no step rising more than 7 inches. The lower dock was built with composite framing and the same ½” spaced WearDeck, and it sits 8 inches above the mean high water line. That keeps it close enough to the water to slide a kayak in easily while staying below the main deck and the seawall cap.

Adding Shade and a Dedicated Fish-Cleaning Area

We installed four new 9 inch piles spaced for a 10’ x 15’ tiki hut, which now shades the seating area the yard never had. A 24” x 50” four post fish cleaning station sits in its own spot, away from where people gather.

The dock was finished with a double run poly rope safety rail, amber reflectors, a retractable aluminum ladder, fourteen rope disconnects, and a dual 2” x 6” handrail with a 2” x 6” top rail where shown on the plans.

The Finished Result

The homeowner who felt she had no backyard now has one. It just happens to be over the water. There’s shade under the tiki, a place to watch the canal through the cutout, a spot to clean the day’s catch, and an easy way to get a kayak in.

Small Yard, Big Dock: Ideas for Cape Coral Canal Homes

Many Cape Coral homes have pools and lanais that leave little room between the house and the seawall. If yours does, the dock may be your best chance at more outdoor space:

  • Shade. A tiki or roof structure makes a dock usable in the middle of a Florida summer.
  • A reason to gather. A viewing or fishing cutout makes the dock a destination, not just a walkway.
  • Easy paddle access. A low platform puts kayaking and paddleboarding right at home.
  • Separate work areas. A fish cleaning station keeps the mess away from the seating.
