Boat lift selection starts with the vessel.

Its weight, length, beam, hull configuration and draft all contribute to the lift requirements. The available water, dock layout, piling locations and clearance around the vessel matter too.

A lift that works for a personal watercraft is obviously different from one designed for a larger boat. Even two boats of similar length can have different requirements based on their weight and hull design.

That is why the lift should be considered during the dock planning process instead of being treated as an unrelated piece of equipment added afterward.

Determining Boat Lift Capacity

A manufacturer’s published boat weight is a good starting point, but it does not always reflect what the lift will actually be carrying once the boat is fully equipped and ready for use.

The total load can include the hull, outboard motors, fuel, fresh water, wastewater, live wells, batteries, electronics, coolers, additional seating, towers, platforms, and other permanently installed equipment or gear. Depending on the boat, those additions can represent a substantial amount of weight beyond the published dry weight.

That is why lift capacity should be based on the boat as it is actually used, not just the number listed in the manufacturer’s specifications. Choosing a lift without accounting for the full operating weight can leave too little capacity and place unnecessary strain on the lift system over time.

When we review a boat for lift installation, we look at the complete vessel configuration so the recommended system has the capacity and setup needed for safe, reliable use.

Not every property needs the same style of lift. Existing docks, seawalls, available pilings, water depth, and the vessel itself can all affect which configuration makes sense.

Traditional vertical systems work with piling supported installations and are available across a range of capacities and configurations.

Elevator lifts can provide another option where property conditions or the existing structure make a traditional vertical configuration less practical.

Dedicated PWC systems provide storage and easier access for Jet Skis and other personal watercraft without trying to adapt a full size boat lift to a smaller vessel.

Planning a Lift Around an Existing Dock

In many cases, a boat lift can be added to an existing dock, but the dock needs to be evaluated before anything is selected or installed. Piling locations, structural condition, available space, water depth, and the size of the vessel all affect whether the existing setup can support the new lift.

Our team reviews how the boat will approach the lift, where the vessel will sit, how boarding access will work, and whether additional pilings or structural modifications are needed. If changes are required, we can plan those as part of the installation rather than trying to force a lift into a layout that was never designed for it.

Vessel Weight & Dimensions

The boat’s weight, length, beam, hull configuration and other specifications determine the appropriate lift system. These details should come from the actual vessel rather than an estimate.

Water Depth & Clearance

The lift needs enough usable water to operate with the vessel and enough clearance for the boat to sit properly when raised.

Dock & Piling Configuration

The existing or proposed dock affects where the lift can be installed. Piling placement, dock dimensions and structural configuration all need to be considered.

How do I know what size boat lift I need?

Start with the fully loaded weight of the boat rather than dry weight alone. Engines, fuel, water, equipment, and other additions need to be considered along with the vessel’s dimensions, hull, and how it will sit on the lift.

Often it can, but the existing dock, pilings, water depth, and available space need to be evaluated first. In some situations, additional pilings or changes to the dock may be necessary.

They can. Larger vessels generally require greater attention to capacity, dimensions, clearance, water depth and structural support.
